5 Tips to Care for Your Jeans to Last Longer

There’s something oh-so special about your favourite jeans. The look. The feel. The fit. And they only seem to get better with age, too. But there’s a fine line. Let them age well and they’ll maintain their unique air of cool. Don’t look after them and you’ll be disappointed. It’s all about how you clean and care for your favourite pair. With that in mind here are 5 tips to make your jeans last longer – style and sustainability all in one!

1. Turn them inside out

One of the distinguishable properties of denim that makes jeans what they are is the colour. Whether that’s light or dark, or somewhere in the middle, you need to be careful to look after the tone. And one of the best, and most well known, tips is to turn them inside out when washing. That’ll help prevent too much colour run, and keep your jeans the shade you want for longer.

 2. Use a quality detergent and conditioner

Another really important part of making your jeans last longer is to use the right laundry detergent and fabric conditioner. And don’t wash them too often, either. You’ll know when they need to be done. Maintain the properties of denim that you love, including the colour and the feel, by choosing quality cleaning products and always following the instructions.

3. Stay cool

Sticking with the wash cycle for now, the last thing you want to do with your jeans is wash them in overly hot water. Instead, turn the dial down to the cool setting. Not only will you benefit from lessening the risks of shrinking and colour run, you’ll be saving on energy too – double bonus!

4. Air dry

Again, you can play your part in saving the planet, one pair of jeans at a time, by letting them dry naturally. It’s good for them and good for the environment. The key is to get them out of the water ASAP and hang them up to dry. If the sun’s out, perfect! Just make sure you turn them inside out… if you’re not deliberately trying to fade them out, of course.

5. Get creative

Last of all, when your jeans really are on their last legs, it’s time for you to get creative. After years of wearing them there will inevitably be some snags and tears that you love, and some… not so much. At that point, don’t get rid, restyle them! Upcycle your jeans create a whole new look in the process. It might be that you use another material from a sustainable rag bag to create a funky patch, or cut them up to make something completely different… some cut off shorts, or a bag even.

That’s it, five great ways to look after your denim, equalling less waste, great style and prolonged enjoyment of your favourite jeans.
